Cradle cap in newborns is a common skin condition. It often appears as thick, scaly patches that are white or yellow in color. As bad as it can look, it is simple to treat and will go away in time. Here are some ways to treat cradle cap in newborns and care for your baby's scalp.
What are the signs of cradle cap?
- There is patchy scaling or a thick crust on the scalp
- Skin that may be greasy and covered with flaky white or yellow scales
- Flaky skin or dandruff
- There might be some slight redness
Does cradle cap bother my baby and what causes it?
Cradle cap is not contagious, and does not make them itch. One cause of cradle cap is thought to be hormones passed from the mother to the baby before birth. The hormones cause an overproduction of oil in the oil glands and hair follicles in the baby's scalp.
Do I need to take my baby to the doctor for cradle cap?
In most situations, you should not need to take your baby to the doctor. It usually clears up with home treatment.
If any of the following happens, take your baby to the doctor.
- Caring for baby's scalp at home is unsuccessful
- The crusting or scaling spreads to your baby's face or body
Your baby's doctor may recommend a stronger shampoo to help dissolve the scales. Hydrocortisone cream applied daily or every other day is sometimes helpful to reduce redness and inflammation.
Another factor which may cause cradle cap is a yeast (fungus) called malassezia that grows in the oil glands along with bacteria. Anti-fungal treatments that are effective in treating cradle cap, support the idea that yeast is a contributing factor.
What can I do to get rid of cradle cap?
These simple tips can help you easily manage baby's cradle cap at home.
- Wash your baby's hair once a day with a mild baby shampoo. To loosen the scales, use a small, soft-bristled brush and run it over baby's scalp. Then rinse off the shampoo.
- Baby oil, mineral oil or petroleum jelly can help loosen thicker crusting and scaling. Apply the oil about an hour before giving baby a bath. At bath time, put a little mild shampoo on your baby's scalp, gently rub baby's scalp or use a soft brush to loosen scales and rinse off the shampoo.

No one said being the mother of a 12-week-old baby is easy! Though we have been lucky to have my mother over to help out for a while, I have often got into arguments with her over the right way to bring up a baby.
Agreed that she raised me and I didn't turn out to be a mass murderer or a cat burglar. However, I did grow up to be an egotistical bigot and I feel that I'm always right. No wonder that I, with a head full of newfangled ideas mined from the internet, am always at loggerheads with Ma, with her reserves of knowledge accumulated over generations. However, through endless trial and error, I've maneuvered through the labyrinth of expert tips and am finally enlightened as to how a baby works.
Being the good Samaritan that I am, I've decided to record my newly-gained insight about parenting for those with newborns, those expecting a baby, and specially for those who are in the habit of collecting useless trivia.
Here's what I've learnt so far about baby care –
- Swaddling a newborn is like making a burrito with a hyper-active live chicken inside.
- When changing a diaper, you're actually trying to wrestle down John Cena while dodging bullets of pee at the same time.
- Feeding a baby demands precision timing and a strict adherence to the demand and supply policy. Even a minute's tardiness can be hazardous to your eardrums.
- Getting a baby to burp immediately after a feeding is like waiting for Mamata Banerjee (a fiery and erratic Indian political leader from West Bengal who uses gimmicks to drive home her agenda) to go off a hunger strike.
- The bravehearts who advise burping a baby several times during the course of a feeding have, obviously, never attempted to take food out of a hungry, angry, and overly emotional lion's mouth.
- Pinpointing the reason why your little one is screaming his lungs out requires deductive skills of Herculean proportions. Hint: Elementary or not, the process of elimination comes handy in such situations.
- To bathe a wriggling infant you need to be as agile and sure-handed as Jonty Rhodes (an athletic cricketer known for his exceptional fielding skills).
- Getting a baby to fall asleep immediately at night is like Waiting for Godot.
- Holding your baby for the first time and for each time to come – priceless!
When your baby is in such discomfort and you are so sleep deprived you can't see straight you'll do anything to find out how to relieve colic.
This article will help you attempt to bring comfort to your baby so you can both get a good nights sleep.
All babies cry, but babies who cry for more than 3 hours a day, 3 – 4 days a week, may have colic. About 20% of all babies get colic. It shows up at around two to four weeks of age and can last for three months, or longer.
It is not known for sure what exactly causes colic. It could be gas related or due to an immature nervous system. Certain stimuli from the environment may cause a baby to cry and be unable to regulate the crying once it starts.
Make sure none of the following may be causing your baby to cry. Is your baby hungry? Tired? In need of contact? – some babies want to be held or swaddled all the time. Startled – jerky movement or sudden noise. Changing – most babies don't like the feel of air on their skin. Is the baby too hot or too cold? Pain – is there an identifiable source of pain, ie. diaper rash or scratchy tag on clothing.
Once you eliminate any possible physical discomfort you can address how to relieve colic. Here are several things you can try.
1. Switching formula. Some babies tolerate soy formula better. If you are nursing it is best to continue unless your baby isn't getting enough milk. Talk to your pediatrition about this. The foods you are eating might be contributing to the colic.
2. Burp your baby frequently during feedings.
3. Make sure your baby is elevated during feedings instead of lying flat.
4. Wrap your baby snugly in a blanket with her arms at her side or on her chest. This makes her feel secure, it feels similar to being held.
5. Warm a towel in the dryer and place it on her tummy. Make sure it isn't too hot first.
6. Use a pacifier.
7. Walk around while holding her or rock her in a rocking chair. You could also try using a baby swing.
8. Massage her tummy or back. This is soothing for some babies. Also try bending her kness toward her tummy and then partially straighten them, do this in a circular motion or do the bicycle with her legs going back and forth in opposite directions.
9. Ask your pediatrition about the possibility of acid reflux.
10. There are products that are made to ease colic. Most are all natural and are said to calm babies tummy instantly. A great product to consider is Colic Calm
If at any point you start to feel overwhelmed, get someone to give you a break. Get some fresh air, breathe deep and remember that this does pass.
Continue trying these different techniques for how to relieve colic. Also keep open communication with your pediatrition on your babies symptoms and what seems to calm her.

A Secure and Soothing Place for Your Infant
Yes, it’s lovely to hold and cradle an infant in your arms — but even the most dedicated parents need to put the baby down and take a break! This is why we love the idea of a baby swing; we’ve seen how they provide a comfortable, safe place for an infant, with soothing, rocking motions to help maintain a very important sense of security and calm. If you’re familiar with older models of baby swings — with their creaky mechanical noises and uncomfortable seats — you should know that the Zen Collection swing definitely takes baby swings to another level.
The swing’s seat is designed for infants who cannot yet sit unassisted. Its basket shape provides security and support for the youngest babies, and it can be adjusted to sit the baby up or recline down. A plush seat cover, padded head support, and built-in cover keep baby comfortable. The swing seat can be positioned to move back and forth or from side to side, and it has a speed-control dial to allow for a variety of graduated speed settings. The swing is powered by battery or can be plugged in with the included adapter. It moves in a smooth, quiet motion with minimal mechanical noise. While baby is swinging, he can listen to one of 14 different soothing sounds with adjustable volume, including Muzak-esque remixes of classical favorites and unobtrusive nature sounds, like chirping birds and babbling brooks.
Knowing parents will especially appreciate that the baby seat is removable and portable. So once baby falls asleep in the swing, you don’t have to disturb him by removing him from the seat. Just lift the seat out of the swing to carry him with you to different rooms in your home.
It’s So Lovely!
A baby swing is not small — it’s basically a piece of furniture. So we’re delighted to find that the Zen Collection swing offers a contemporary and sophisticated palette that can complement your home’s décor without making your house look like one big nursery. You won’t find any frills or pastel colors here. Its contemporary pattern features sprays of leaves and dragonfly silhouettes in stylish tones of cream, chocolate brown, and moss green with ruby-red accents.
Its lovely textural touches include wood-finished handles, satin accents, and embroidered detailing on the cover, as well as on the mobile toys, which are cute and stylish. The toys include two plush dragonflies and a plush turtle, topped with matching umbrellas. It stands on a sturdy, dark brown, metal frame that’s heavy enough to provide good support and security. Not only is this swing good looking, it also makes a great choice for unisex decorating.
Easy Assembly, Sturdy Construction
The swing took us less than half an hour to assemble and required only a Phillips screwdriver. One minor problem: we had to re-thread the mobile so it could hang properly. The assembled swing has a 26-by-33-inch footprint and stands 47 inches tall with the mobile attached, so it takes up quite a bit of room. This is something to consider if you have limited living space. However, the base folds together easily, so you can lean it against a wall when it’s not in use.
What’s in the Box
Removable infant seat, mobile, swing motor, swing frame components for assembly.

Among all of the exciting and challenging things a new parent faces, one surprisingly difficult task is creating a baby registry. It seems like such a fun idea – picking out the nursery patterns and tiny little outfits – until you realize you know absolutely nothing about what a baby needs. In my own experience, it was the bottle aisle that completely overwhelmed me. But, after spending a week or two tracking down a couple of new moms and asking for their advice, I was able to resume the registry process. I've compiled this list to save you time and energy and to make your registry experience the most pleasant and stress-free possible.
Below you'll find a list of recommendations to help you decide which baby items you need and a few you might want, as well. When helpful, I have recommended a quantity in parentheses. Most times, the quantity is dependent on how much laundry or bottle washing you wish to do.
Clothing
Footed sleepers/gowns (5-7 recommended) Footed sleepers can be worn day and night and keep baby's feet warm. Gowns are not just for girls and great for those middle-of-the-night diaper changes. They slide up and down easily over the legs and have no snaps to deal with.
Onesies (8-10) This odd little word is something you'll become very familiar with if you haven't already. It describes little t-shirts that snap between the legs. They are often sold in packs of 3 or 5, and I recommend registering for a few packs. They are great for layering in the cooler months, and in the summertime are perfect with a pair of jeans or tiny sweats. Or, if it's really hot, no pants at all. I suggest registering for two sizes: 0-3 months and 3-6 months
Mittens (2-3 pairs) Tiny babies have tiny fingernails, but they always manage to find a way to scratch up their beautiful faces. Baby mittens are a great way to help avoid that, especially in the early weeks. Be sure to find ones with the stitching on the outside of the mitten to keep any loose threads from wrapping around baby's little fingers.
Socks (3-5 pairs or more) They will fall off constantly, so be prepared to lose some. They work well as an extra layer of warmth when wearing sleepers. Also, as shoes are not necessary (nor are they recommended at this young age), socks will protect feet. A bonus tip: Wash baby socks in a lingerie bag as they have a knack of finding their way into washing machine parts that are quite expensive to repair. Don't learn this the hard way as I did.
Outfits Obviously, these are completely subjective, so I won't recommend anything in particular. But I will warn you that newborns go through more clothes in a day that most adults do in a week. So, you may want to hold off on registering for designer clothing or anything hand-washable. Durable fabrics, such as cotton or cotton blends, are best, since they will be able to withstand multiple washings. You might want to wait to get most of the clothes until after the baby is born since babies range so widely in size and grow at such different rates. You may be in the 0-3 month size for only 3 weeks, or you could be buying that size for 5 months.
Bedding
Receiving blankets (5-7) These are great for swaddling your baby and also for a light covering when it's not too cold. They are also often sold in packs of 5.
Other blankets (2-3) Thicker blankets are useful for cold nights or as a shelter when draped over the infant carrier.
Crib sheets (2-3) Crib mattresses are smaller than twin mattresses, so be sure to register for sheets that fit your mattress.
Waterproof plastic mattress cover (1) This cover zips around the mattress to fully protect it from accidents.
Padded mattress pad (2) Having an extra mattress pad will hopefully keep you from having to do laundry in the middle of the night.
Lap pads (5-7) These can be small enough to fit on the changing table and large enough to cover the crib mattress (sheet protectors). They are high-absorbency and help protect sheets and changing pads.
Sleep positioner This helps keep your baby on his or her back while sleeping, as recommended by pediatricians to reduce the risk of SIDS.
Bottles/Feeding
Bottles (8-4 oz, 5-9 oz) Newborns won't need the larger bottles for several months, but it's sometimes nice to have them on hand. As for the quantities, you must decide how often you want to wash bottles keeping in mind that newborns eat every 2-3 hours. If you're breast-feeding, you may still wish to have some bottles on hand for emergencies or if you plan to pump.
Breast milk storage bags/containers If you're planning to nurse and pump, these are essential. Bags are great for freezing milk, and some containers convert to bottles for easy transferal.
Breast pump There are all types of pumps, and generally, the more money you invest, the more efficient it is. If you can afford an electric pump, I recommend it since it's such a time-saver.
Breast pads These fit in the mother's bra to help absorb any leaks that might soak through to the shirt.
Bottle brush/drying rack If you're planning to use bottles, you'll want to invest in a bottle brush that comes with a nipple brush attachment. You'll also want to get a bottle drying rack (usually sold near or with the brushes) and/or a top-rack dishwasher basket to hold small pieces.
Burp cloths (12-15) Depending on how much your baby spits up or drools, this number may be too high or too low, but it's a good starting point. A package of 12 cloth diapers works well, but, as with most baby products, there are a variety of other cute options.
Breast feeding pillow and cover (2 covers) The most common of these is a Boppy, which is a C-shaped pillow that wraps around your stomach or side and helps you hold your baby up while feeding. As your baby grows, you can also use it to help with “tummy time” or when first sitting up. Covers are sold separately and are machine washable.
Bibs (7-10) Velcro bibs are so much easier to put on and remove, and at this young age, your baby will not yet be able to take it off.
Pacifiers (4) Pay attention to size (0-6 months and 6 months +) and material (latex or silicone).
Pacifier clip This attaches to the pacifier so it can be clipped to your baby's clothing or bib to prevent the pacifier from falling to the floor.
Furniture/Nursery
CribIf at all possible, I highly recommend borrowing furniture. If you plan to get a new crib, I would register for a one that converts to a bed. It will save on the expense of buying your child a bed when they outgrow the crib.
Crib mattress
Changing tableThis isn't absolutely essential, but it does provide some extra storage, and more importantly will save you the inevitable back ache that comes from changing multiple diapers on the floor.
Changing pad and covers (2-3 covers)The changing pad can be placed on top of the changing table or dresser or on the floor, but it is useful for keeping your baby from rolling around while changing diapers. Terry cloth covers will keep your baby from touching the vinyl pad directly and getting too cold , will absorb any leaks, and is machine washable.
Dresser This or another piece of furniture to hold your baby's clothes and blankets is very handy. Your child will use it for years.
Rocking chair This is another non-essential but convenient piece of furniture to have in your nursery, especially for nighttime feedings.
BassinetteThis is a smaller crib that your newborn can sleep in before moving into his or her own room. There are many different kinds so find the one that's right for you.
Crib bumper In addition to your other crib bedding, you will want to register for a bumper which will pad the sides of the crib and offer protection as your baby starts to roll around more. You can often find them in patterns to match crib sheets, quilts, and bed skirts.
MobileMany babies enjoy staring at the moving mobile above their crib and listening to the soothing music. Make sure you listen to the mobile before you register for one and find one that plays music you won't mind hearing over and over.
Crib mirror This ties on to the inside of the crib to allow your baby to study his or her own face–something they love to do.
Nightlight (2-3)You may want one for the bathroom, your child's room, and maybe the hall, depending on the size of your home.
Hangers(16-24)
Baby Gear
Car seatAn infant carrier with a base (one base for each car is helpful) will get you through the first six months or so. If you'd like to go ahead and register for a convertible car seat, you can do that as well. This is the car seat your child will use until he or she is big enough for a booster seat (approx age 4).
Stroller Many manufacturers make “travel systems” that include a stroller and infant carrier. These are very convenient as the infant carrier snaps into the stroller and offers extra stability. Once the baby outgrows the carrier, he or she can sit in the stroller seat. These can be rather large, so if you have a smaller trunk, you may want to look at more compact strollers.
High chair/booster seatDepending on your available space, you may want to forgo the traditional high chair and just register for a booster seat. If you have room, however, I'd recommend getting both as they have different benefits. A high chair with a 5-point harness system (with shoulder straps) is very helpful for holding a wiggly baby still. Also, padded and colorful cushions help too. Some manufacturers have toy attachments that are very helpful for keeping a little one occupied while the rest of the family tries to eat. Booster seats are a great way to save space, as they fit onto a chair and usually can be folded up for storage or transportation. Whatever you decide, make sure the tray is easy to remove and is dishwasher safe.
PlaypenMore commonly known as a Pack N Play, these wonderful items can work as a bassinet, a play yard, and a crib. They also collapse and fit into a carrying case, which makes traveling that much easier. You can find all sorts of accessories to fit your needs–from a changing table attachment, to a diaper shelf, to a tent covering, and more. Most playpens are made by the same companies that make strollers, so you can register for matching patterns if you like to be coordinated. Don't forget to register for sheets, as well. They are packaged separately, and depending on how often you planning on using the playpen, you may want several.
SwingThis item is not essential, but a lot of babies like the soothing motion of a baby swing. My children rarely used their swing but I know other moms who couldn't live without one.
Activity center/jumperThese can be free standing or attach to doorways, but they all accomplish the same thing. They keep your child entertained but contained so you can be free to cook a meal or do some laundry. They, once again, are not essential, but they are very helpful once your baby is sitting up and starting to move and explore.
Baby CarrierThis will free up your hands while still keeping your baby close whether it's at the grocery store, cleaning up around the house, or even going for a walk. They come in several different styles: the front carrier, the sling, the backpack (for older children). Try several on (maybe with a weighted bag) and see what feels most comfortable to you.
Baby MonitorThis will allow you to hear (or even see) what's going on in your child's room from anywhere in your house. There is a wide range to choose from, but at minimum, I'd recommend an audio monitor with at least two channels (to reduce picking up noise from your neighbor's house) and two receivers (to keep in separate parts of the house).
Baby Care
Digital Thermometer Pediatricians recommend taking your child's temperature rectally, but in-ear thermometers are also available if you prefer that method.
Infant Tylenol
Saline nose drops
Nail clippers
Nasal aspiratorThese are often sent home with you from the hospital or birthing center, but you may want an extra one.
Cotton balls
Petroleum jelly, gauze padsIf you're having a boy, these will be essential.
Baby shampoo/body wash
Hooded towels/washcloths
Baby tubThere are several types of tubs for babies (space-saving folding tubs, sponge tubs, etc), and all can work very well. The most important thing is that your baby can have a bath in a safe environment.
Cool mist humidifierThis is the biggest help for a stuffy nosed baby. Just be sure the humidifier blows cool air to avoid burning your child.
Laundry detergentBabies have very sensitive skin, and Dreft and All both make wonderful, gentle detergents that also clean well.
DiapersYou'll need more than you could ever imagine. You may want to register for a few different brands to see which work best for your baby. If you have access to a warehouse store (Costco, Sam's, BJ's, etc), invest in a membership, and buy your diapers there.
Diaper wipes
Diaper bagMost hospitals will send you home with a diaper bag, but you may want one of your own. Look for bags in a neutral color (so dad won't mind carrying it) with extras like a changing pad, a small cooler bag (to hold bottles or cups) and lots of pockets. Also, a padded strap to ease back pain is also a plus.
Diaper pail When looking for a diaper pail, you'll want to find one that eliminates or masks odor the best. Some are used with special bags (sold separately) and others use garbage bags. It's up to you to decide if better odor protection is worth the added cost.
Toys/Playtime
BooksBoard books and soft, teething books are great for babies and toddlers.
Teething toys
Rattles
Activity matThis has a colorful, padded mat for your baby to lie on and toys hanging down from above for them to swat at. Best of all, it folds up and out of the way very easily. My babies loved their mat so much that they sometimes even took naps on it.
Music/DVDsIn addition to your own music collection, your baby might enjoy a CD of lullabies. Just make sure you also enjoy it because you could be listening to it for years. There are some great DVDs available for babies (Baby Einstein, for example). A couple of these are nice for long car rides or a rainy afternoon.
Digital cameraIf you don't have one already, I highly recommend registering for one. Every parent wants to capture his or her child's every move, and with a digital camera, there's no limit on how many photos you can take.
Baby bookYou can register for scrap booking material and make a book completely from scratch or find the fill-in-the-blank kind. Either way, you will want a place to record the events of your baby's birth and first-year milestones. It's also a great place to put all of those pictures you've taken.
CamcorderRecord everything from the actual birth, to the first steps, to the first birthday and beyond.
CD playerPlaying music in the nursery is a great way to soothe your baby and also to block out household noise.
BatteriesYou'll want batteries in all sizes and lots of them–AA's for your camera all the way to D size for the baby swing.
I hope this list has been helpful. I know there are some things I've left off, as the baby market is limitless, but this should get you started. If you've got any questions, please ask or if there's something you'd like to add, please do.
Good luck and happy registering!

I just had my second baby in February… My other son is about 23 months old. I purchased a Graco SnugRide, to find that the only strollers like this one manufactured were the Snap-n-go (SNG) and the Universal Infant Holder (UIH).
I purchased the SNG, knowing that the Graco wouldnt fit properly. Well about 2 months ago I was walking with my son in the carrier (and in the SNG) and my other son was “holding onto the stroller”. I am not sure how he did this, but my nearly 2 year old knocked the SNG out of place. I didnt even realize until we went off a curb and the carrier popped out! I was so angry, that a toddler could un-attach the carrier without even trying!
I went back the BRU to find that Graco came out with its own stroller frame, meant only for the Graco Infant Carriers. Luckily BRU accepted my return, and I was able to recieve the Graco model. I LOVE it. First of all you do have to assemble it, sort of like the SNG and UIH, but its much easier and safer. I am not worried that I put it together incorrectly either, since there’s only one way to do it. My SnugRide also fits in easier, and sturdier! I loved that the carrier wouldnt wobble around when the stroller was used, and that it was like having a whole Graco Travel System! The handlebars have a cup holder, and a compartment for keys and stuff like that, which is useful. I also love the large and spacious basket! Its easily accessible, and VERY strong! The wheels are Graco quality, and very strong. They dont rattle, or “roll on nothing” like the SNG did. I also love that it folds with one hand! At first it was “sticky”, but I believe its from the minimal use it had received… Now I can fold it compactly, and it fits well into the trunk of my Jeep Liberty! I also believe that its the lightest stroller Graco provides, and since I was only going to use a single stroller for a few months (before I transition to a double) I wasn’t looking for an extravagant system. I was even able to attach the stroller platform, so a child could stand! All in all an amazing stroller.
I recently purchased a double stroller, for when my son can no longer use the Graco. I will miss the convenience, and lightweight frame, but I have an expecting mother waiting for her turn to use the Graco SnugRider Infant Car seat Frame!

very good value for money – Eve Harty – London
My grandson of 20 months is loving this swing. It is a little difficult getting him in it, but it is very safe and very good value for money. I would thoroughly recommend it.
Cradle Swing
Your time is a commodity very limited. To be honest, frankly, that the time would surely be spent with your child, and should not be wasted on other things. The child is the desire and the focus is your duty to give your child the attention he needs. However, children are asleep. The sleep you get is very precious to you for two very important reasons. In First, you need time to yourself. The only time you get to yourself, unfortunately, is when the baby sleeps. Fortunately, most babies sleep about 18 hours during the day, and you should get at least some 'of that time.
However, once they are about a month of life, are always looking for your help and attention. A baby swing is the ideal element to help children sleep. Most of their music, Baby Bouncers, and get baby asleep much faster than you can. Not only that, but usually keep them sleep longer than they would normally sleep. Once baby is asleep, you have plenty of time to do what wish.Secondly, if you're like me, you need at least seven hours of sleep. Not that you consecutively. Sorry. But when we had our baby, the only way to make him sleep for more than 3 hours in a row was to have him in the swing cradle baby.
It worked like magic. The songs would play for about 10 minutes and then shut off while swinging him. This has been a life saver, as I get my sleep and go to, Baby Bouncers, work, and my wife was unhappy with a C-section.When all is said and done, it should at least consider getting a baby or a swing swing cradle. Some come bundled with the bouncers, etc. The purchase will probably be one of the things that are more proud that you want to share with your friends. In this way, not only child will be happy, but Mom and Dad will be thrilled!

This is a must have item. We had two swings. One, a Baby Einstein, given to us and although we were grateful, she hated it. The second one, we purchased, was this swing and it has served us every stage of my one-year olds infant life.
As a newborn, my daughter didn't like swinging but would fall asleep if swinging sideways. Something about the side-to-side movement on a newborn's head was comforting to her rather than the back and forth motion of a traditional swing. The first few months she slept in this swing, sometimes overnight. You know when sometimes that is necessary because you need a decent night's sleep. The lights and white noise provided a distraction during very trying colicky times. I love the variety of settings and combinations that give the parent control. The “reset” button to allow for continued use without clicking any buttons is a wonderful feature.
This swing grew with her over the following months. As she learned new developmental movements like sitting up and rolling over, she much preferred to practice than go to sleep. We would put her in the swing and she would go out like a light and then we would transfer her to her crib where she would get a great nap. This allowed her to learn when naptime was and encouraged her to give in to the feeling of sleep.
Around 8 months she began to crawl and would scream like crazy if I had to stick her in her crib when somebody came to the door or I had to run to the restroom and didn't want to leave her unattended. The swing was the ideal place for her to go. She enjoyed swinging by this stage. It was also nice to be able to feed her a simple snack like puffs or cheerios and not have her be sitting in her high chair or the floor.
Now that she's a crawler/walker, we still use the swing. She loves pulling up on it and likes the fact that it is not stable like a table. She uses it to practice her balance. She still plays with the spinning toys on the tray. And she STILL is swinging in it. She's a tiny one-year old, 18lbs. Most children this age have surpassed the weight limit. Thankfully she has not because she's going through a transitional period where she is re-figuring out her nap schedule. When all else fails, we can put her in the swing with a bottle of soy milk (we're beginning to wean) and she falls right asleep!
Yes, it uses 4-D Sized batteries but you need power to run something so technologically advanced. Our batteries would last us around two weeks. Sometimes a little longer. We just bought them in large packs from Costco. Totally worth it as we used this swing daily.
Thank you Fisher-Price for this wonderful, wonderful product!

Review:
Simple and uncomplicated, this swing is everything a baby swing should be. Although it lacks the bells and whistles of other more expensive models, this swing is a workhorse. The design is sturdy and solid. It has a 3 point restraint and non-slip feet ensure that baby is safe in this swing. The open top design makes picking baby up from the swing and putting baby down in the swing very easy. When removing a sleeping baby from the swing this design makes it easy to avoid waking them up. Operation is a breeze as well. If space is a concern, this swings compact design is a big plus. This product is available in three different pad designs to fit any decor. Suggested retail price is $46, which is on the low to average side for a new swing in a retail store. It is exclusively available at the baby depot at Burlington coat factory. I can also be found used and new on eBay, craigslist, in your local paper, and other similar places for less than the suggested retail price. The only major draw back that this swing needs battery changing fairly often, depending on amount of use. With an average of two hours use per day the batteries will need changing about once every two weeks.
If you are looking for a baby swing without all the extras that does it's job this baby swing is ideal.

I recently wrote about five things you must have when you bring your baby home. These items include the car seat, wardrobe essentials, diapers (cloth or disposable), a bed, and a thermometer. These are things that a parent will certainly need in the first week or days after the birth. Surely they would love to have other items, but they are the bare essentials. With that said, there are five items that will be high on the list of things the parents of a newborn will want. They are listed below.
1. Diaper bag: As you will surely transport the baby from place to place, you will need diaper bag to transport their diapers and other essential items with you. Your diaper bag should fit a half dozen diapers, baby wipes, have space for bottles, and a couple changes of clothes. You can hold off on getting a diaper bag for a while though as most hospitals give out small diaper bags when they release you from the hospital. You can also use a large purse or bag that you already own.
2. Baby swing or bouncy seat: There will be times when you want a few minutes to go to the bathroom, wash your hands or prepare a meal. Baby swings and bouncy seats come in handy at these times. The motion provided by these seats keeps the baby calm while you perform your short task.
3. Baby monitor: A baby monitor allows you to enjoy a your quiet moments when the baby is napping without having to check to see if the baby is awake yet. New high tech models will allow you to not only hear, but to also see your baby. A but an old fashioned second hand model, however, will suffice. For the parent who wants the best baby monitor money will buy read “Which baby monitor will actually work”.
4. Baby Sling or Baby Bjorn: A baby carrier such as a baby sling or Baby Bjorn will allow your baby to be close to you as you go about your day. This will result in a calmer baby who will quickly bond with the parents. That is, if you have a strong back. These are preferable to strollers when the baby is very young as they are much less bulky to deal with when you go out. If you don't get one of these, you will need a baby stroller.
5. Organic toiletries: While organic baby wash and lotions are not a 'must', they are a 'should'. With so many babies with skin allergies, eczema, and psoriasis, there is no reason to skimp on these products. Aveeno Baby and Toms of Maine sells great organic products for babies.
Random thing number one: This falls under the category of Mommy moment.
A week ago, my husband, my son, and I went to the park. Hubby and me on bikes; son on scooter (son is four). Hubby, of course, predicted that son would never make it to the park and back on the scooter. We're talking about three blocks. Me, I'm an optimist. “If son wants to try, son can try.”
It's the quoted attitude that got me in trouble this fine day. See, my four-year-old is somewhat fearless. He has his own quad. He likes to jump from the top of the slide to the ground – without sliding. He's been swimming underwater since about nine months. But, for all this time, he's refused to leave the baby swing (the one that looks like a black, hard plastic diaper) and go to the regular swing. I've gently tried to persuade him to try. Saturday, he got on the regular swing, apparently he's been doing this at school, and he wanted me to push him.
Higher.
Now, the only thing keeping my son in the swing were these tiny, little boy hands. WHAT IF HE LET GO? I couldn't make myself push him higher. I wanted him back in the baby swing where if he let go, nothing would happen. He’d be stuck there in the black, hard plastic diaper imitation. I stood there gently pushing him and realizing, he's going to be doing lots of things where he could get hurt.
It’s all part of growing up. Not his letting go, but mine…
BTW, this whole post reminds me of a historic Pamela Tracy Mommy moment. When my son was about 9 months and started standing, I frantically called my sister. See, I was afraid to put him to bed at night. What if he fell!!! Her response: What better place to fall than a mattress.
Do you have any Mommy moments that make you look back and laugh?
Psalm 55:22 “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.”

Someone on Formspring asked me this question, and I decided to answer it in full here, since there are way too many things to say on this subject.
“Is it expensive to have a baby?” The short answer is yes and no.
I'm going to try and explain how much money has been spent so far, but keep in mind that this is our first baby and firstborns usually come with a lot of really unnecessary spending. Sorry, second child- you're getting hand-me-downs, snapshots and email birth announcements instead of Janie & Jack, professional newborn photos and $200 birth announcements.
I'm going to try not to differentiate between what we got as a gift and what we bought ourselves. Not everyone has a baby shower (or three), so I thought it would be helpful to know what you're getting yourselves into if you were to go at it alone. Also keep in mind that 75% of the stuff we have is NOT necessary and Mia would be just fine without a $75 coming home outfit.
You might be one of those people who are lucky and get everything off yhour registry as a gift, but please keep in mind that most people wont buy you diapers and formula or pay for insurance/hospital and pre-natal doctor visits. You need to know to budget that in.
Here we go…
So, you're pregnant. Congrats! Get out your checkbook and keep it handy for the next 9 months and 18-24 years. (25 years if you are OMGmom's dad…sorry pops.)
The first expense you will have is the pregnancy test. These can run you anywhere from $1 at the dollar store to $30 at some stupid place to buy a test like Whole Foods. Or, they will cost you $100 if you go to the ER ($100 co-pay) or $20-40 if you do it at an OBGYN (if that's your copay and you have insurance). Do what you want, but we got ours at the dollar store. Go figure.
Positive result? Great! Now go stock up on those pre-natal vitamins. I got my first batch at Whole Foods (i am stupid) because I wanted to be all organic and give my baby the best. Those were $35 for a 3 month supply. I should have gone to Walgreens and gotten their generic brand for $17.99 for a 6 month supply. After I was done taking the Whole Foods horse pills 3 times a day, I got the Walgreens ones and took one tiny pink pill, once a day.
Do you have insurance? The first three months of your pregnancy are when you do the majority of your labs/blood work so you better seriously consider getting insurance that covers maternity before you get pregnant. I had individual insurance for the first 4 months of my pregnancy and individual (not a group/employer plan) insurance generally only covers problem pregnancies, not normal/healthy ones. This means I dished out a shit load of money until I could get on my employer sponsored plan. My pregnancy was not planned, so I was on individual coverage, not my employer's plan, because it was much cheaper for me. I had to wait 3 months to get covered at work once we found out- and yes, they covered me midway through my pregnancy because they are required by law to not discriminate for pre-existing conditions.
Insurance for me was $205/month with $20 co-pays at the OBGYN. In the beginning, however, I was a cash-pay patient for pre-natal visits since my policy did not cover maternity. You can generally work out a cash-pay plan with your OBGYN if you do not have maternity coverage for a cheaper rate. For example, the hospital stay, delivery and pre-natal visits with my OBGYN would have been around $6K, not including ultrasounds or labs, with the cash-pay discount. Otherwise, I would have paid upwards of $10K for everything. Ultrasounds are $250 each and labs were $150 to $2500. The $150 lab was blood work to confirm my pregnancy. The $2500 lab was the amnio, which I will get to later. As I mentioned before, I had a falling out with my first crack-head OBGYN (who told me that the whole “don't eat sushi while pregnant” was a scam started by Greenpeace), and ended up seeing a Perinatologist. Perinatologists are specialists and you really only go there if you are high-risk or over 35.
Before I switched to a Perinatologist, I spent $615 on insurance (3 months @ $205/month), $250 on ONE ultrasound and $3000 on labs. Factor in the $500 deposit I paid to cover the discounted rate for cash-pay patients and that's $4365 in 3 months. The moral of this part of the story is GET ON A GROUP INSURANCE PLAN. Had I been on one, I would have only spent $60 thus far. EPIC FUCKING FAIL.
*Tomorrow you will find out why I saw a Perinatologist.
Moving along….OK, so now you're starting to look pregnant and not just bloated from drinking too many bottles of Bud Light. Your clothes don't fit, so you now need maternity clothes! This is really exciting for pregnant women nowadays with great stores such as Pea in the Pod, Motherhood Maternity, Gap Maternity and Old Navy to make you still feel sexy/trendy/not wearing a tent while you're pregnant. Also, and I only found this out after I gave birth (but secretly bought some of it because it fits great), H&M has a maternity line. I usually don't shop there because I can't justify their prices against the quality of their clothes, but it's perfectly fine to buy “throw-away” maternity clothes. You're only going to wear them for 9 months (month 4 to, well, now…if you're me). I spent a grand total of $600 on maternity clothes. It sounds like a lot, but you have to remember that I had a job when I was pregnant and I couldn't show up in $10 sweats or my husband's t-shirts. I had to look professional. It would have been more if it wasn't for my rich friend Tina. She gave me all of her nice, expensive maternity clothes she wore only a year before, and I was able to pull 15 shirts and 2 dresses to squeeze my fat ass into. Thank heavens for rich friends. You also need to plan on buying a pair of bigger shoes because your feet will swell or, if you're like me, they will grow a size. Also buy bigger bras and underwear. This is the when granny panties are your best friend.
But back to the doctor bills…If you don't have health insurance, think about getting on a government funded plan because it's extremely expensive if you don't have coverage. I was going to the doctor once a month, then every three weeks, then every two weeks, then every week and finally twice a week in the last month. Add all those co-pays up and I spent roughly $250. That's just your regular co-pays, and don't include a trip (or two) to the ER in the middle of the night if you think you're in labor ($50-$100 ER co-pays apply here) or non-scheduled doctor visits for fetal monitoring because you think the baby isn't in there anymore because she hasn't moved in a few hours. You might also want to factor in money for a psych evaluation.
It's time to push your baby out! How exciting! Our hospital bill was $700. $450 for the hospital stay, $100 for the doctor's fee and $150 for the epidural. Yes, the anesthesiologist is a separate bill from the hospital/delivery fee. Worst $150 ever spent, for me at least. Epi-the-A-hole can now buy those totally unnecessary Kate Spade flip flops you've been coveting, but can't afford. Asshole. And he did his job wrong. Mother Effer.
So, the grand total so far spent on pregnancy (JUST your pregnancy):
Pregnancy Test- Average $15
Prenatal vitamins: Average for 9 months (add another bottle for breastfeeding): $40
Maternity Clothes:$600
Doctor/Hospital:*$5315
*if you're me….average $is $500 for prenatal + delivery fee for smart people with insurance.
TOTAL: $5970
GAWWWWWWWWW. Poor house anyone?
You have a baby! Congrats! Are you broke yet? No? Well, don't worry- that will change in about 5 minutes. This is what we spent money on, but keep in mind that your child doesn't need a crib or a bassinet since technically they can sleep with you. I'm going to dare to say that these are typical expenses for most couples with a newborn, judging from the 8 baby showers I have attended this year, and the probably 15 or so friends who are expecting or had a baby around the same time we did.
Are you nursing? You need lots of stuff.
Nursing bra- $12 @ Target or $50 at specialty stores. I don't know why you wouldn't buy the Target bra, but hey- everyone is different. Also get some nursing tops while you're at it (I spent a total of $150 on nursing tops/bras/strapless dresses for easy access).
Nursing wrap- You might say you won't breastfeed in public, but get one of these anyways. For one, you'll have a shit load of visitors when your baby arrives and you wont want to whip it out (and make your dad uncomfortable…sorry dad) in front of everyone. I got one at Target for $15, but most people get the fancy ones and spend up to $50. Why? Not sure.
Breast pump- Mine was the Medela Pump-in-Style and retails for about $280. You can also rent one from the hospital or lactation center, but they are difficult to come by. They run anywhere from $150/month to $25/month. Shop around!
Breast Pump Accessories- extra tubing, extra storage bottles, freezer storage bags, replacement parts, nipple cream, nipple wipees (stupid…get a Kleenex)- Plan to spend around $100 on this junk. Don't get too upset though- remember, breast milk itself is free!
Boppy pillow or My Breast Friend pillow- $30-$60, depending where you buy them. I got our Boppy at Pottery Barn Kids and got a personalized cover. REALLY GOOD PURCHASE. You need one of these if you plan to breastfeed.
Formula Baby? No shame in that!
You can get generic formula from Target or regular name-brand stuff. PLEASE, ladies, PLEASE steal every ounce of formula you can from the hospital. It doesn't expire for a really long time and you might find that breastfeeding isn't the right path for you and your baby. You'll appreciate the free formula, trust me. I spend $25 on a can that lasts a week. We use Enfamil Premium, but we have tried Similac and the generic brands as well. There's no telling what your baby will like, so there is a lot of trial and error in the beginning, which equates to a lot of wasted money. Get over it.
You also need bottles. We use Playtex VentAire, which are $6/each, but really you can use any bottle you want. These aren't better or worse than the Dr. Browns or Avent, etc. Find what your baby is comfortable with. Mine didn't care, as long as there was food in it.
If you use bottles, you'll need a bottle brush for cleaning. $4
DO NOT BUY THE STUPID BOTTLE STERILIZER MACHINE. They are $50-$100 and take up a LOT of counter space. You won't save any time. You aren't saving the planet. I recommend the Medela Quick Clean bags, found here. You can use it for breast pump accessories and bottles/nipples. They are $5 for a pack of 5 and each bag is good for 20 uses. I got through one bag use a day. You can do the math if you want, and I don't care if they end up more expensive in the long run than the bottle sterilizer machine, but they are so much more convenient. I sterilize with each wash. I also travel a lot, and I cant travel with a big honkin' machine, can I? No. Its so easy to stick a bag in my suitcase. You wash the bottles, put them in the bag, add 2 oz of water, microwave for 2 minutes, and you're done. TRUST ME when I say you wont have time for a big machine.
Diapers: Steal every diaper you can from the hospital. Most hospitals use Pampers, which I have found to be better than Huggies (personal opinion) and the generic brands. Really, Pampers brand is not that much more expensive than the Target brand. We spend about $60/month on Diapers. Wipes- we go through a pack every week. That's about $10/month.
Butt Cream- never used it, couldn't tell you.
Baby bath- ours was $10, but feel free to buy the deluxe baby spa for $75. Yep, uh-huh, your baby will totally know the difference. We use Johnson & Johnson's baby wash and lotion. So far we have only spent $20 on value packs and still haven enough left for a whole year. You need towels and washcloths. We have Pottery Barn Kids towels, but the Target ones are fine. $20 average spent on towels/washcloths.
Dreft baby detergent- $15/box. I bought ONE box and it lasted for 5 months. After that, the doctor said not to waste money on it and just use free & clear Tide or All. That's what the hubs and I use already, so we lucked out. But most people do use Dreft detergent for the first year.
Baby Clothes- I wont even go into how much money we spent on clothes. We are stupid. Correction: I am stupid. The hospital sent us home with a pack of baby kimono shirts, which she wore for the first 2 weeks. That meant we had to box up about $150 worth of newborn outfits that she never even wore, not even for a second. I could have returned them to the store, but I was a good mommy and washed them in Dreft (and folded, refolded, ironed, organized, hung-up, repeat) before she was born. My rich friend Tina gave us all of her baby's hand me downs in the first 3 months, so we were lucky. She was wearing Baby Gap and Janie & Jack when she would have been sporting the Wal-Mart brand of Carter's. Thank you, T. In the last 6 months I've spent about $400 on clothes for her. She's my doll, what can I say?
Baby Shoes- Really stupid, don't buy them. You're welcome.
Nursery- Everything from her Crib to her bedding to the glider/ottoman to the TV was about $2500. Really stupid, considering we could have just bought a co-sleeper and saved $2450. Oh well. Her nursery is the shizz. I like it better than our master bedroom. Most of the furniture was from Babies R Us (who I hate), her bedding is from Pottery Barn Kids, and the glider is from Target. After speaking with a few friends about their own nurseries, $2500- $3000 is average. Isn't that ridiculous?
Insurance for the baby- YOU MUST HAVE INSURANCE FOR YOUR BABY. Your baby will be covered for the first 30 days under your own plan, but after that you must either add them to yours as a dependant (which usually costs extra), or get them their own plan- either through a private insurance carrier or a government program. Either way, you need it. You will have well baby visits and shots in the first week and those are not cheap. We have insurance and our co-pays are $20. Add $100 for the time we went to the ER in the middle of the night only to be told that she didn't like her formula. Anyways, they go twice in the first week for a check-up and then for shots, then at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months….anyways, they go a lot in the first year. You might choose to not vaccinate your child, but you still have to go for the well baby visits. So far, $200
Stroller & Car Seat- We paid $299 for our combo travel system (you remember me telling you about it, right?) That's about mid-range. Add $80 for each base- we have 2, one for each car. $460 total.
Condoms/Birth Control- Zero dollars. You wont need it. Correction: You wont have a need for it.
Baby Medicine/grooming needs/hygiene- You should stock up on stuff for fevers, gas, teething…get whatever brand you want. Organic. Expensive. Generic. Who cares. We have infant Tylenol, Mylicon (for gas), teething tablets, stuff like that. Set aside $20 for the first supply, but get two of everything so you have a supply for the diaper bag. You also need fingernail clippers, comb/brush, baby emery boards, diaper rash cream, lotions, the list goes on and on. Do your own research and choose whatever you want. Or be like us and get what's on sale. Our stuff in this category adds up to around $50.
Toys, Walker, jumper, bouncy chair, swing, pack-n-play, etc.- You need a place for baby to be put down in every room. Realistically speaking, you can't carry her around all day. We have a hand-me-down swing and bouncy chair and we bought a used walker/jumparoo thingy from my rich friend Tina. Grand Total here: $100, but be prepared to spend $500 on all of this junk.
Baby Bjorn- we used it once. $80 plus $50 for the fleece cover.
I can't think of anything else we have or bought, so I'll stop here.
Adding everything up…
Grand Total: about $12,000
And we are only in month 6. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY CHILD CARE. Add about $12K/year for child care.
Disclaimer: We had 3 baby showers, and probably half of the stuff was gifted to us. Also, it wouldn't have been so expensive if we had insurance those first few months. Sure, many of the items we have are not necessary, but they are pretty typical/normal purchases for a lot of first time parents. Our baby would be just as happy wearing the same 5 onesies over and over again and sleeping with us, instead of in her expensive nursery. You live and you learn. We are so incredibly blessed to have such wonderful friends and family that pitched in with most of our baby needs.

First off congratulations on your newborn baby! While at the hospital, ask the nurses and doctors as many questions as you can think of there is no dumb question. The nurses working with you have been around a lot of babies and will be happy to show you anything they know on extra tips to help with your baby. Don’t forget to enlist any family and friends to help out for the first few weeks. The granny’s are already pros, and can teach you a lot. So keep this in mind when they are giving advice. Do not feel obligated to use every ones instructions follow your instincts.
First and most important is the car seat. Follow the instructions, if you need help the hospital nurse will help, and there is always a number to the manufacturer. Just do not buy a used car seat. You have no way of knowing if the seat has been in a car wreck. If a car seat has been in a wreck, this impairs the protection that a car seat is meant to provide. If your in a wreck call the manufacturers some will send you another car seat just for asking.
Do not be afraid to hold your baby. While this seems intimidating as long as you support the head there are many positions you can hold your baby in. Against your shoulder, across your lap. With your hand under the baby’s chest, neck, and jaws you can actually lay the baby on your forearm, good for leaving your other hand free.
If your going to breast feed ask the hospital to send a lactation specialist to your room, and let them know you want a pump. This will help out so much. In addition ask where you can rent a pump. This will make a big difference in milk production as well as keeping the breast from overfilling. Just remember to ask to be shown how to nurse, and do not get frustrated if this does not work the first time. Give the baby about 15 minutes on each breast.
When formula feeding give them a couple ounces of course ask the doctor first. If the baby has any problem with feeding call your doctor for advice. Whichever method you use be sure to burp the baby often. This is easy enough, you can pat the baby’s back gently and hold in whichever position is most comfortable to you. If the baby still seems to have gas you can lay the baby in your lap, and lightly bounce, your knees while patting the baby’s back, and supporting the head.
Changing your babies diapers. At the hospital diapers are provided, you may choose to use cloth, and this is a personal preference. Just remember a baby’s bladder is no larger than a peanut, so check them often, and remember you will be going through a lot of diapers for the first few months about 10 per day. If you do not have baby wipe warmer, at least run a few through warm water. Always clean the back too, as urine and feces can go up the back. Make sure with a female to always clean front to back and get in all the folds. Keep diaper rash medicine on hand and use as a preventative with each diaper change. An old home remedy, if you brown some dry flour in a pan, this can be used as baby powder without all the dust. Now that the diaper change is done this is the time to clean the umbilical cord with alcohol as directed by your doctor.
Bathing your baby is relaxing for the baby. This is best done at the changing table even if it is the baby tub since all the baby supplies are right there. Until the umbilical cord falls off it is best to sponge bath, this is quick and easy. Since your sponge bathing you can leave the diaper on until you get to that part. Get a little container of warm water, use the washcloth to wash the baby from head to toe all but the face, start with the hair, and leave the private area for last. To wash the hair just use the damp cloth or baby brush lightly to clean the head, and be careful when cleaning soft spot. While washing the baby keep dipping the wash cloth in the water to keep it warm, and be sure to get in all the crevices. Take your time with the fingers and toes. You can use a q-tip to clean the creases around the neck. After your all done with the body, wash the face and eyes with a cotton ball with just water. Quickly dry the baby, then give them a nice light massage all over with a little lotion, then dress. When the baby graduates to tub baths, make sure the room is warm. Lay a towel on the changing table to set the baby tub on. Fill the tub with just a couple inches of water check the water with your elbow, to make sure it is not too warm or cold. Most important is the support, put your hand under the babies head with one hand, and use the other hand to wash the baby, soak up water and keep squeezing this over the baby to keep them comfy. To wash the back you can lay the baby over your arm long ways and support the head while working quickly to wash the back. Just make sure you give one last rinse over, and until the baby then quickly wrap baby, and dry the baby. Dress the baby so they will not be cold.
Finally the bathing, and feeding are done. So you can put the baby to bed. The baby’s bed, should not have a bunch of covers, blankets stuffed animals or cute items in the bed with the baby. As long as the baby is swaddled, and you keep the temperature warm in the home this is enough. The baby needs to be trained to sleep on the back. You can not be too careful because of sudden infant death syndrome. It is best to keep the bassinet in the room with you if you can, until the baby is 3 months or be sure there is a baby monitor next to the baby’s bed so you can hear them if there is any problem. It can take weeks for a baby to sleep all night, so catch your sleep when the baby is napping so you can get your strength up.
Some vanity items that you will find useful. A baby swing which can not be used until baby can hold the head up, a baby wipe warmer, a battery operated bottle warmer/cooler combo, baby Einstein lullaby music, sun protection-all year round, portable changing pad, a diaper genie, a nursing pillow-this can be used even when not nursing to help support baby, netting for the top of a playpen when outside, baby monitors, sleep position blocks, and a baby sling.
Recommended reading topics. Sudden infant death syndrome. Shaken baby syndrome. What to expect the first year is the best book I ever read about child care be sure to buy it or check it out from the library.
Important tips: Do not shake your baby. Do not ever leave a baby unattended in a car even for a minute. Always completely engage the belts and support for placing baby in the car seat per the manufacturer instructions. Never leave a baby unattended on changing table, or in the baby bath, or anywhere except the baby bed, not even for a second.

Fisher Price Reinforest swing —
I bought this swing for my son who is now 5 months old. A friend recommended that I buy this swing because you can choose to swing your child, front to back, or side to side. We received it in the mail and set it up very quickly. It is very sturdy and the seat is very soft (we got the little lamb model). As soon as we brought home our son, we put him in the swing and it put him right to sleep. The swing is quiet and has a lot of nice features. I know some people said that it made a loud clicking noise, but our does not. There is going to be some noise, as there is a small motor in the swing, so no swing will be silent. We keep ours in the living room and it never bothers us in terms of size or noise. At times, this is the only place my son will sleep. He loves it and I have claimed many times, that this is our lifesaver! We purchased this swing when my son was about one month old. He loves it! He really likes the bright colors of the mobile animals and used to stare at them in amazement. As he has gotten older (he's now over 4 months), he gets bored a little more easily, so he doesn't like to stay in it for as long as he used to. I usually use the swing when I need to get things done around the house and can't take him along – like cook meals. I'm sad that he's quickly approaching the weight limit of 20 pounds (he's a big kid), so we won't be able to use it for a longer period of time. We bought this particular swing because of the bright colors, its ability to be plugged in, and because it can swing both side to side and front to back. We also liked the music choices. Most of the songs are easy to listen to and won't drive you crazy. There is even one choice of just animal sounds (birds chirping, etc). It's nice for when you really don't want music playing in the background of your phone call.

To be able to proceed, you need to solve the following simple math (so we know that you are not a spammer) What is 2 + 7 ?
A baby swing can often be a life saver for a new mom. They are soothing for baby and allow mom to get a little rest. When shopping for a baby swing there are many different options, from really expensive swings to cheap swings. It is very important that you get a swing that works for you and your baby. There are a few things that you should look for to insure that you get a quality swing for your money. Every baby swing should have secure restraints, this is extremely important especially if there are older children around. The chair should have smooth surfaces and edges so that the baby will not be scratch or hurt by them. Make sure the swing is very sturdy, and note what the weight limit is on it and always abide by it. If you are going to put an infant in the swing then it should have a seat that reclines. Avoid swings that have hinges that could pinch small ones, and small parts that could break off and become a choking hazard. So keeping all this in mind, here are the top three swings for under $115.
The first baby swing is the Bunny Smart Stages swing from Babies R Us. This swing is priced at $79.99. The swing features two soothing speeds and both classical and lullaby songs. This swing converts from a baby swing to a baby seat and then finally to a toddler rocker. The swing has a weight limit of 25 pounds, and the toddler rockers weight limit is 40 pounds. With this swing you get 3 products for the price of one. Although this swing is very basic, it is very good quality for a very affordable price.
The second swing is made by one of the top baby product producers, Fisher price. The Ocean Wonders Aquarium Cradle swing is available for $99.99 at Babies R Us. This swing has received great reviews, not a single negative review could be found on this swing. This swing was created for children from birth all the way up to 25 pounds. The swing will sway front to back like a swing or side to side much like a cradle. It has six speeds, eight songs, and three aquatic sounds to sooth baby. The seat has a two position recline so that it is comfortable for new born as well as older babies. The baby’s is entertained with a view of a water globe with lights and swimming characters. Around the water globe is a motorized mobile with plush fish. This swing does require 4D batteries that are not included. With its bright colors and wonderful aquatic theme this swing is sure to sooth any baby.
This last swing is very much like the previous swing. The Fisher Price Baby Papasan Cradle swing is available at Wal-Mart for $114.28. This swing has many of the same great qualities as the Ocean Wonders swing. It can sway from front to back or side to side. It has six speeds and eight songs and nature sounds. This swing’s seat is nest like so that is cradles baby. The seat has added head support for infants and it has 2 reclining positions. This seat also gives baby a wonder view of an overhead globe and motorized mobile. This swing’s globe is a mirror so that baby can look at themselves. One added feature of this swing verses the others is that this swing folds for easy storage. Another plus for many parents whom are fashion conscious, is that this swing is in neutral colors rather than bright vibrant colors.
What is the perfect baby cradle swing for my four month old child?
Baby cradle swings for a four month old baby are placed on the floor and shouldn’t have much of a swing. This is because a four month old is very fragile and though at this stage, babies like being rocked, the baby cradle swing needs to be gentle with the least amount of movement.
Before I buy my child his first baby cradle swing, what advice could you provide?
My suggestion is to make sure that the baby cradle swings you are picking out from features a pretty good size to accommodate the child’s anticipated growth. Instead of ordering a baby cradle swing which fits exactly, think of leaving a little room for growth.
Do you endorse baby cradle swings that comes with sounds?
Presently, many baby cradle swing models contain music boxes attached to them, apparently to put your infant to sleep. This is a good idea especially when the sound playing is a classic lullabye as ‘rock a bye baby’ and ‘lullaby and good night. ‘ This is the best way to familiarize the child to sounds and you could even sing-along to the songs as you put your child to sleep.
Which is better, baby cradle swings mounted on the floor or suspended from the ceiling?
By far the ideal baby cradle swing I may highly recommend for you would be floor- mounted ones. This is because for something as cherished as your infant, you’d need the most secure available baby cradle swings. Floor mounted swings also give you the option of being able to transfer your baby cradle swing from bedroom to bedroom.

As I was lying next to her one lazy afternoon, I thought about how I love having my hair brushed. It always relaxes me and feels so good. I decided brushing my daughter's hair with a soft brush might feel good to her too. I got one out, and started softly brushing her head. She seemed to love it, appeared very relaxed, and was lying very still.
Suddenly, I noticed little white flakes floating in the air after each brush stroke. Having grown up taking care of babies, I knew exactly what this was: cradle cap.
I continued brushing until the flakes stopped coming off. Then, I got on my computer to do a little research. (I have to admit, I go a little crazy with my computer research when it comes to my baby.) From everything I read, it seems that no one really knows what causes cradle cap, and that although it might not be pretty, it isn't harmful to the baby. Satisfied that the cradle cap wasn't a result of me being a bad mother, I decided to keep an eye on it and relax.
However, I later recalled my mother telling me that when one of my siblings had cradle cap, a well-meaning friend told her, “Just leave it alone. It will go away on its own.” My mother cringes as she remembers how it indeed did not go away on its own. Instead, it got out of control, and thick. Yuck! I wasn't letting that happen.
After doing a little trial and error with cradle cap control, I figured out a system that worked very well for me. First, I wash my baby's head gently with a washcloth each morning. I don't put any shampoo or soap on it; I just use warm water. Then, about once a week, I put a little baby lotion on her head (we use Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion) and brush it for about five minutes. I make sure to wash the brush with soap and water after I'm done.
This has completely taken care of the problem. Every now and then I see some yellowish patches on the top of her head, which I promptly take care of, but other than that, the cradle cap is a thing of the past.

Ma, I never had anything like this so it’s not an everyday experience for everyone. You wrote this beautifully and for the moments it took me to read it I had that experience too. From the bottom of my heart I thank you for sharing these precious moments with me.
If you don’t mind, I would love to share this with my sister. She is over our children’s Christmas program at church and I know she would love to share your story with those children.
This gave me Godbumps. After a baby’s birth, new mothers and fathers must learn a range of things from feeding bottles, how to change diapers and immunization records on so on. They also have to choose the right kind of bedding for their baby. According to Dr. Mark Brandenburg, parents should consider the baby’s safety and comfort when selecting the right baby bedding.
Dr. Brandenburg has stated that the baby bedding must not be too hard or too soft. Based on previous medical records, most sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS cases were associated with very soft bedding, because mattresses that are too soft can cover the nose and mouth of the baby. If this happens, the air that the baby exhales is also the air that he or she breathes in. As the baby breathes in the carbon dioxide, it may suffer from drowsiness, and this may unfortunately lead to a coma or death.
Baby beds come in various styles and are made from various materials like wood, plastic or metal. The baby bedding you choose must perfectly fit your selected bed.
There are three major options in selecting a bed for your baby.
Bassinets are oblong or round shaped baskets that are commonly filled with lace and trimmings. The baby bedding should fit the bassinet in order to give he or she enough space to roll from one side to the other.
A crib is a bed with high side bars for the baby’s safety. Cribs are more economical compared to other beds since the baby can use it up until around two years of age. Usually, cribs are square shaped; therefore, the mattress fits to size. You may use bedding with a coverlet and small pillows or hot-dog pillows. It is not advisable to use too many pillows however, because the baby may fall over if they stand on them. Limit the pillows you use to two or three only.
A cradle is a small low bed that has rockers on its stand. Cradles come in different sizes and shapes. Some mothers chose cradles because they can rock it to calm their baby. Again, the baby bedding should follow the cradle’s shape. You do not need to stuff the cradle with too many things since its main purpose is to rock the baby to sleep.
Now you have some idea of the different kinds of bed available, you must now decide what is best for your baby. Whatever option you choose, ensure that your baby is safe, warm and secure. Use baby bedding that is made from cotton since that will be cool to your baby’s skin. To enhance your baby’s color and pattern recognition, you should also consider using bedding with different designs and colors.

I love this swing. I originally wanted a swing that would turn into a toddler rocking chair but the only ones I could find were at least $50 more than this swing. I can just wait and buy a rocking chair when he is a toddler with the money I saved. He is three weeks old and already loves the swing. It plays neat sounds and has several speeds. We are going slow right now. The bugs are so cute!! The toys are a little high but they are cute and sway with the movement of the swing. The baby seems to like the nature sounds.
